Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the youth hockey season?
The Shawano hockey season begins September 15th & ends March 31st. The skating actually begins in mid-October with the beginning of the season being used to set up & prepare for the season. Tournaments end the season in mid-March with the rink take-down the final (2) weeks of our season.

Are there any entry level programs / How old does my child need to be to participate?
Shawano Hockey is a co-ed league. To participate at the Mite level, most kids are 5 years of age. There may be some exceptions to that though. We also teach a “Learn to Skate / Learn to Play Hockey” Program. This is a (10) week session, held for 1 hour on Friday nights. In this class, the kids are given one on one teaching to help them overcome any fears related to skating so they can ultimately skate independently. Those interested in hockey get individual instruction on stick handling, passing & mini scrimmage play. This program begins in November & runs through mid February.

Do you have to live in Shawano to participate?
Our league consists of kids from Shawano & a variety of surrounding areas, including:
Clintonville, Bonduel, Pulaski, Oconto, Marion & Keshena. Guests come from a wide range to participate in other programs we offer. (see below)

What is the cost to be in Shawano Hockey?
The 2009-2010 league fees are: Mites - $100.00; Squirts - $225.00; Peewees - $275.00; Bantams -$400.00. We offer payment plans that begins in March at the Annual Banquet & run through the final registration in September. We also offer discounts to those who pay at early registration in July. At times, we are able to offer financial assistance to families in need & this is reviewed on a case by case basis. **HS WIAA fees yet to be determined.

How often do the kids practice?
Each team practices (2) nights a week, with exception of HS, who practice (3) nights a week. Practices generally run about an hour.

How many games are played during the season?
Each year the scheduler talks with the coaches to find out how many games they’d like scheduled for the upcoming season. On average, teams play 15 games at the youngest level, & increasing the number according to the age of the team & coaching/parent wishes. If a parent is not able to attend a game, the child is typically able to catch a ride with another family.

Can my child get private hockey lessons?
We do not offer ‘private’ lessons here, but there are a variety of skating facilities that do. If you give us a call we can direct you to a program that might interest you.

Do I have to put in volunteer or ‘work’ hours?
Every family does have to put in work hours (50 for a family or 40 for a new or Mite family). You can get your work hours in many ways & often families put in more time that they need to so the program is running well. Work hours may include: concession time, Open Skate supervision, team cleaning, fundraising, working on committees, Attending Board Meetings, driving the Zamboni, skate sharpening, & on. During the course of the (6) month season, there is no problem getting your hours.

Do I have to Fundraise?
Shawano Hockey has one Mandatory fundraiser – the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas Raffle’. Each family is required to purchase a certain number of tickets, which they then can re-sell. The money they collect from selling tickets is theirs to keep. Basically, if you sell the tickets there is no cost to you. This has been a very popular raffle for us. We do other fundraising throughout the year & ask that you volunteer, if you are able, to help those happen. Fundraising hours, with exception of the raffle, are credited toward work hours.

Do you have a Figure Skating Program?
The Figure Skating Program is run through the Park & Rec Center. Emily Larsen coordinates & teaches this program. She teaches beginning – advanced figure skating with classes held after school on Fridays. There is a Fall Session & a Winter Session with registration held at Park & Rec. Watch backpacks for information on this program.

What other programs do you offer?
Programs run by SHL include: Adult Hockey League (Wednesday nights); Adult “Beginner” Hockey (Sunday nights); Open Skating (Sat & Sun. nights, with added times when available); Private Birthday / Club parties & School Incentives. We also have rental ice available to visiting teams/leagues who may need to rent.
