Hockey Facts
Why Play Hockey?
Hockey provides overall body conditioning, including upper and lower body strength, hand-eye coordination, balance and dexterity. Players become more confident, begin to understand the power of teamwork and the value of sportsmanship. Hockey players are constantly on the move from the moment they hit the ice as they learn to skate forward and backward and how to quickly change direction or make lateral moves.
Your child can't skate?
No problem. Our USA Hockey-certified coaches will teach them! We think you'll be surprised how quickly they learn from coaches who truly love the game.
What skills are learned?

How can parents afford hockey?
Shawano Hockey League parents manage the rink and the hockey organization on a volunteer basis, which keeps costs low. Parents volunteer time (20-40 hours, depending on age group) and participate in fundraising.
Cost varies by age group, with the cost for:
- Mites, ages 5-8 at $75 for the season (October-March).
- Squirts, ages 9-10, is $225
- Pee Wees, ages 11-12 is $275.00
- Bantams, ages 13-14 is $400.00
What's required for fundraising?
Each family is asked to sell a specified number of tickets for our 12 Days of Christmas raffle. You can either buy them yourself or sell them to others.
Volunteering isn't your thing?
Shawano Hockey League offers many options to satisfy required volunteer hours, including rink set-up and take-down,off-ice supervision at open skate, cleaning at the rink, working with 2 other parents in the concession area, or working on a committee with other parents.
How much time is involved?
Skaters practice 2 times per week for one hour. Teams play 7-20 games a season, with the greater number of games at older age levels. Games are played at the Crawford Center or in surrounding communities.
What about equipment?
Our equipment manager can talk with you about equipment when you register. Sometimes hockey gear can be borrowed for the season from Shawano Hockey League. We also have an equipment swap each fall where new skaters can buy used equipment in good condition.
How do you get that Equipment ON!?
